Abstract
What kind of Asian am I? Chinese? Indonesian? (I'd rather be Korean!) What does that mean? What do I look like to others? How do I see myself? These questions drive some of the most fascinating art to come out of Southeast Asia. They are also fascinating to students in the U.S. – part of their visual culture is Anime and Manga style characters, although they know very little of the history behind the style and Asian visual culture in general.
This presentation will place contemporary Southeast Asian visual culture and some of its Japanese relations in context.
