Description

Traditional teacher licensure programs provide the majority of individuals who educate our nation’s youth. Previously, formalized programs have limited opportunities for those unable to adjust life and work schedules to participate in the array of courses and practica necessary for state licensure. In Massachusetts, and some other states, alternative licensure programs have enabled individuals working in other professions to meet the requirements and begin careers as secondary grade-level teachers. As a result, accomplished practitioners from a variety of fields now serve in schools and subsequently include real-world information in their courses that expose students to knowledge that enables them to develop aspects of the national “21st Century Skills Initiative.” Since its inception, hundreds have competed the BSU Accelerated Post-Baccalaureate Program. Survey results from fifty recent graduates will be presented to identify the 21st Century Skills students have developed as a result of the instruction they received.
