Description
This paper studies the effect of education in multi-generational household dynamics. In particular, it examines the impact of a daughter-in-law’s education on household division of labor in multi-generational households in India. Analysis of time use data shows that an increase in the relative education of the daughter-in-law increases her share of household work. This paper contributes to literature in three distinct ways: it studies power based dynamics between female-in-laws in a multigenerational household setting in India; it adds further layers to this analysis by differentiating outcomes by caste, class and religion; and it shows light on within gender dynamics that call for a more complex treatment of gender as a category.
