Description

Freedom of scholarly inquiry and the essentials of free speech in discourse are principles undergirding the character of intellectual and academic inquiry both within and outside the gates of the college and university. The concept of the university is defined by the capacity of academic communities to adhere to these fundamental ideas. How then has this history of free speech, academic freedom, and concerns over liberty played out in the academy in America? Who have been the key players? Who have been perceived at the time and with reference to the future as winners and losers? What have these battles and the parties to them done to shape the fabric and identity of the college and university in this country?

This presentation is based on a chapter of a forthcoming (spring, 2016, Lexington Books) book, The Shape and Shaping of the College and University in America: A Lively Experiment.
