Description
This panel session will discuss the issue of student loan debt at BSU, and ways BSU faculty and administrators can help students to gain control of their finances by taking advantage of resources available at BSU. Students make many financial decisions while they attend BSU, related to work, housing, transportation, and everyday purchases. Their ability to make these decisions in an informed manner is important because the amount of debt that students acquire during their college years can limit their ability to buy homes and cars, travel, and pursue further educational opportunities after graduation. BSU students can be encouraged to complete SALT, which is a free online financial literacy program that covers topics such as budgeting, educational planning, and internships. They can also explore scholarship and work study opportunities, and submit their financial aid forms in a timely manner. Faculty may help by being mindful of students’ financial constraints when they order textbooks.
