Description

Contemplative Pedagogy initiatives often focus on the demonstrated potential of specific teaching techniques and how they improve student-related outcomes. This cross-disciplinary workshop takes a slightly different approach: the interactive session will include in-depth contemplative practices that support integration of body, mind and affect. Building on the research demonstrating that training in reflective practices fosters self-knowledge and increases compassion, we will explore how best to sustain our professional development through attention to movement. By increasing awareness of one’s immediate physical experience, academics can improve their capacity for concentration and patience. Choosing to practice techniques which embody a contemplative approach may, in turn, help to sustain a caring attitude toward students and colleagues. Building on previous workshops, attendees will experience extended mindfulness-based practices that they can use in their daily lives. Group discussion will focus on how we all might incorporate embodied contemplation into our own discipline of self-care.
