Description

Most educators depend on voice to make a living, but voice should not always be taken for granted. Voice quality determines our ability to convey feelings, attitudes, and subtle messages. It enables us to modify pitch and loudness levels to keep our listeners engaged. This session will discuss basic anatomy of the vocal folds and how they work to produce voice and modify pitch and loudness levels. It will also explain how voice can be directly influenced by hearing impairment, short-term memory, self-regulation and swallowing. Behavioral and environmental factors that can damage the vocal folds and alter their function will be discussed. These include vocal overuse, abuse and misuse, allergies, smoking and noxious vapors from paint products and household cleaners. The session will provide practical ways for maintaining adequate vocal health and quality and for utilizing voice to keep our students engaged.
