Description

Social-skill development is a process that begins immediately at birth and may continue throughout life. In order for these skills to develop, the person must first acquire specific cognitive and language skills. This presentation focuses on neural development during the first five years of life. It discusses neurophysiological and neuroanatomical changes that begin occurring after birth and how the brain forms the earliest cognitive schemes and language concepts that give rise to social communication. The session also discusses how the child‘s interactions with the caregiver and the environment shape brain development and promote release and regulation of social bonding neurotransmitters (such as vasopressin and oxytocin). Major deterrents to social communication acquisition and development will be discussed. The goal is to raise awareness about social-skill development, and to provide educators and caregivers with research-based recommendations for ensuring optimal developmental conditions for children during the formative years of life.
