Description
Service-learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility and strengthen communities (Corporation for National and Community Service). This interactive session will highlight two faculty colleagues who have recently integrated service-learning methods in their courses. Laura Ramsey (psychology) is currently teaching a Second Year Seminar on the Psychology of Women. Brian Payne is currently teaching United States History and the Constitution up to 1865. They will share the challenges and opportunities that they have faced in planning for and using service-learning as a pedagogical tool. Participants are invited to bring questions, concerns, ideas and experiences related to the use of service-learning and civic engagement. Resource materials will be available to people who are considering how to use service-learning and civic-engagement in their teaching.
