Event Title
Poster: Engineering Integration in Biology Lab and Science Methods Courses
Location
Moakley Atrium
Start Time
9-5-2012 3:45 PM
End Time
9-5-2012 5:00 PM
Description
This session will describe and show examples of how two instructors have utilized engineering concepts to help teach science content and provide BSU students with experiences to understand what engineers do. In the lab course General Principles of Biology, taught by Deborah Fiore, students compared the scientific method and engineering design process to distinguish their similarities and differences and understand the interdependent relationship of science and technology. Students then utilized the scientific method to design and carry out investigations to test proposed hypotheses. In the science methods courses for preservice preK-6 teachers, taught by Nicole Glen, students first utilized scientific inquiry to learn science concepts and then applied the concepts to engineering tasks to understand the similarities and differences between these fields. The engineering experiences that the students in all of these courses encountered were modifications of the Engineering is Elementary curriculum from the Boston Museum of Science.
