Description

No Child Left Behind mandates that English language learners are assessed annually for English language proficiency. There are approximately 70,000 K-12 English Learners in Massachusetts. Massachusetts will be joining the World Class Instructional Design & Assessment Consortium (WIDA). Twenty-seven other states, including several in the New England area are already part of this consortium. This organization provides English language proficiency standards, a language proficiency screener and the annual English language proficiency assessment. Knowledge of WIDA is imperative for all pre-service and in-service educators who teach linguistically diverse learners. This workshop will introduce educators to WIDA and provide sample test items and student score reports to review. Strategies for increasing the use of all four language domains, speaking, writing, reading and writing across content areas will also be discussed.
