Event Title

Are We Done Yet? Pedagogical Strategies for Managing (and Embracing) the Looooong Class

Location

Hart 116

Start Time

11-5-2011 2:20 PM

End Time

Description

Constraints in student and faculty schedules, as well as the classroom space crunch, often require that faculty teach 2.5 hour once-weekly classes. Catherine Womack and Maura Rosenthal will lead a session in which participants discuss some of their challenges and triumphs in teaching once-a-week semester offerings or long summer class sessions. Of particular interest is the experience of teaching Core courses in the long format. Some issues to be discussed include: How can we best space out active learning techniques throughout the class session to keep students engaged? How can we best use the time to encourage deep learning and discussion of course topics? How do we maintain continuity of learning during the term and avoid over-stimulation-induced shutdown during summer? Attendees are encouraged to share their own experiences of teaching long classes, with the goal of uncovering potential solutions or ways to leverage the longer class for innovative pedagogical exercises.
