What are the implications of the emerging mixed-media environment in which traditional skills and literacy are blended with new media literacies? What skills are needed to navigate effectively in environments extended by social networking, blogging, wikis, YouTube, iTunes, RSS media feeds, Skype, Flickr, and countless other interactive digital media? This session will provide a brief overview of several of these media, as well as a research-based profile of millennial learners. This will be followed by a discussion of literacy skills needed for critical thinking in a multimedia-rich environment. Utilizing the Moodle Course Management System, a sample lesson module will demonstrate how to redeploy traditional literacy skills in the service of 21st Century media.
