Description

Over the years, many teacher training programs have introduced online courses to graduate students. The online components help cut travel time for many candidates who work all day in school. While striving to balance the life between working, studying and taking care of their families, adult learners in teacher training programs are expected to acquire new knowledge from courses they take. The question of how to teach, motivate and keep online adult learners on task has been a challenge for many professors in teacher training programs. How can one design a course that allows candidates to learn while accommodating their life situations? Would a possible answer be to adopt a Learning Contract Model that has been designed based on Malcolm Knowles’ theory of andragogy?

When I was first asked to teach an online course, I was both excited and nervous. I was excited about the new adventure, but nervous about teaching a class using a medium that I knew little about. As the first one in my department who started to teach Mathematics online, I would like to share my first year experience teaching Pre-calculus MA100 and Quantitative methods for Management MA318 with you. I will talk about the strategies that I chose, the challenges that I had, the positives, and the drawbacks.
