Second Year Seminars are a part of Bridgewater State College’s new Core Curriculum. The purpose of this interactive presentation is to provide models for teaching second year seminars. Second year seminars are designed to engage students in a specific academic area of interest and provide them with the opportunity to reinforce, share and interpret knowledge. Second year seminars can be writing intensive or speaking intensive. There are many effective and creative models for meeting the outcomes for the second year seminars. The participants in this presentation will discuss their unique and creative approaches for teaching a second year seminar. Some of the innovative pedagogy to be presented includes the use of base groups, podcasting, community-based learning, drama, and fieldwork. Participants will discuss strategies that were particularly effective and approaches that did not work so well or needed to be modified. Handouts consisting of syllabi and other course materials will be provided.
