In Summer 2005 I visited Portugal for five weeks where I interviewed Portuguese speakers in the district of Coimbra and in the villages of Pereira, Pedrulha and Andorinha. This sociolinguistic study is the final stage of a broader research project into the genesis of Brazilian Portuguese, which explores the possible contributions of Africans as well as rural speakers to this variety of Portuguese.
