Project Description/Abstract
This project focuses on the creation of a cataloguing system for and the digital photo-documentation of over 600 crates of 16th-20th century tiles that still survive and are stored in the environs of al- Haram al-Sharif (Temple Mount) either in the Islamic Museum, its courtyard, or elsewhere on the site. Since their removal from the Dome of the Rock in 1964, many tiles have disappeared or been destroyed, and are at risk of being disposed of by authorities who do not see their value. This is a new aspect of my research proposed (while on sabbatical this fall and winter) as part of a larger project, which includes incorporation of this material in my book on the Dome, the creation of a computer model of the Dome in its pre-1960 state and the development of an exhibition proposal for the Jordan Museum in Amman.
