Project Description/Abstract
For my 2013 summer grant I proposed to look at how President William McKinley and William Jennings Bryan discussed America’s purpose in the world during the 1900 presidential campaign. Although there has been a good deal of discussion of this campaign in the past there really has never been a direct comparison between the two politicians and their stances regarding U.S. foreign policy, particularly in the field of rhetorical studies. So I took this opportunity to write about this project as part of a larger research agenda focusing on how American presidents discuss the United States’ role in the world and for a larger book project that I am working on.
