Title
F. Holland Day: A Biography
Document Type
Grant Proposal
Date Accepted
Spring 2007
Project Description/Abstract
This small grant will support expenses connected with the publication of my biography of F. Holland Day (1864 – 1933) by the University of Massachusetts Press. A bibliophile, publisher, and photographer, Day founded a publishing firm often compared to William Morris’s Kelmscott Press, his photographs remain striking today, and his influence as a promoter of photography as a fine art rivaled that of Alfred Stieglitz. Experts consider Day to be one of the most important photographic artists in history, one who remains influential in current photographic circles. This grant will allow me to 1) obtain images for inclusion in the book; 2) pay for any associated permissions for use of photographs or manuscript sources and; 3) allow me to hire a professional indexer to index the work.
