Abstract
Chinese History 185 is a course offered by Harvard University this spring focusing on China's prominent historical periods, political figures, customs, arts, and literary accomplishments. In addition to learning the course content, students are asked to create topical modules as homework assignments. These modules will be assembled to build a new online course called ChinaX, Teaching China's History Online. Like other open online courses, ChinaX is intended for students from all over the world who are interested in learning Chinese history. It will be delivered in the near future through HarvardX, Harvard's open online course platform. For building ChinaX, artistic images are heavily used in order to enhance and enrich the new course content and the learning experience. This presentation will reflect on how two librarians from the Harvard Yenching Library and the Fine Arts Library got involved in building the rich visual collection with their expertise to support the endeavor. This presentation will also illuminate the possibilities and challenges that libraries may face in the ever-changing Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) movement.
