Description

Chronic stress can have a significant effect on the immune system, the respiratory system, the cardiovascular system, the digestive system, and can increase the risk for diabetes. Chronic stress is also strongly associated with psychiatric illnesses, particularly neuroses. Research suggests that new faculty members are a high-risk population for stress related problems that have implications for health and work performance. Thirty-three first and second year BSU faculty members completed surveys that assessed their perceived stress, the sources of their stress and their stress-related symptoms. In this lightning talk, I will share the results of the surveys, and hopefully generate some ideas about how to ease new faculty members’ transition to the BSU faculty community.
