Description
Many countries classified as Low or Middle Income Countries (LMICs) have a dearth of mental health resources available to their citizens. Haiti is one such LMIC where mental health resources are often unavailable and mental illness holds profound stigma. After the 2010 Haiti Earthquake, mental health and particularly stress and trauma became common topics of conversation among professionals and lay people. With so many people exhibiting symptoms of traumatic stress, questions about mental health and social well-being began to arise. The Teacher Mental Health Training Program (TMHTP) in Haiti was designed to introduce new knowledge about mental health and wellbeing to medical staff, teachers, and community leaders in order to reduce stigma and help them identify resources in the community for those in need of support. This presentation will discuss the TMHTP being conducted in Haiti and how it is being used to lessen stigma about mental illness and build best practices for promoting positive mental health and social well-being.
