Description

Given time constraints, personal obligations and financial limitations, students often opt for a brief study tour instead of a semester or year-long alternative. The challenge is thus to maximize the value of such study tours for the students as we attempted in our recent Cuba study tour. We started as a semester long course and limited the actual visit of Cuba to a nine day trip to minimize the cost. This “hybrid” approach mixed lectures/class discussions and a tour of Cuba. We further challenged graduates and undergraduates with different assignments. More videos, articles and industry specific data were posted on Blackboard. We asked students to keep a reflective blog of their experience and to post articles in discussion boards on a number of issues with a final paper as deliverable. We used word mapping to select issues to present and compared Cuba to other countries already in transition.
