This panel presentation provides a multi-disciplinary view of the practice of evaluating and monitoring college student dispositions and behaviors for human service related disciplines. The ongoing assessment of student attitudes with regard to becoming an appropriate and effective member in certain fields can be a controversial process. However, when the field includes clinical work with vulnerable populations, how can we balance supporting our students’ career aspirations while also ensuring their emotional, attitudinal, and ethical suitability to enter and be successful in our chosen disciplines? How can we distinguish between the student who just doesn’t seem right for the profession and the student who clearly is pursuing the field for all the wrong reasons? Panelists will discuss how they determine student readiness for admission into their program along with their eligibility for clinical work. The development of discipline related dispositions, at-risk reporting protocols, and the counseling-out of students who prove unsuitable for the field will also be discussed.
