Description
This panel by the Performance Studies Working Group showcases the interdisciplinarity of performance studies as a scholarly and practical field. It encompasses the fields of music, literature, and theater and combines artistic practice, pedagogy, and scholarship. Rando’s presentation, “The Poem’s the Thing… Definition, Intention and Method,” discusses the form and methodology of performance poetry. It draws on Rando’s experience teaching “Poetry in Performance” courses and her involvement in poetry slams and poet’s theater. Heidi Bean’s presentation, “Learning from the Dramaturg,” offers theater’s production dramaturg as a pedagogical model for students in arts and humanities classrooms. Her presentation briefly discusses the practice of dramaturgy before offering some classroom exercises. Nemko’s presentation, “‘Creating Spaces in Time’ for Musical Presentations: A New Approach to an Old Problem,” examines efforts to create new spaces for performance practice within a context of budget cuts to arts education, including community and corporate spaces and internet broadcasts.
