Description
Each year approximately 7.5 million U.S. athletes participate in interscholastic sports (IS) potentially experiencing positive benefits associated with their participation including development of a sense of pride, learning teamwork and self-discipline, as well as enhanced physical and emotional development (NFHS, 2011). The purpose of this study was to explore how a highly successful U.S. high school girls’ volleyball coach utilized effective coaching characteristics in a 2-week long pre-season. Results describe how the coach demonstrated seven aspects of effective coaching: creation of environment, development of relationships, consistently planned and organized, use of in-depth knowledge, creation of autonomy, the use of meaningful experiences, and earned support. Results from this investigation add to the breadth of existing knowledge on coaching effectiveness and, therefore, have implications for coaches and coach education programs as they strive to create quality interscholastic sport experiences.
