Description
This presentation will focus on a specific, albeit often “invisible” subgroup of the military – members of the National Guard and Reservists, and as such are members of a distinct culture which also has characteristics of a disenfranchised group. When members of the military return home from deployment overseas, acculturation and reintegration often is a difficult process. The military is 1% of the US population and through their often multiple deployments experience different “worlds”/cultures which can significantly impact their adjustment to their communities … and our classrooms. Presenters will discuss the military as a “culture”, highlight the differences between active duty vs. this unique subgroup of veterans, and relate the above to the needs and challenges of our military students on campus. Recommendations for making this transition a smoother process and retention for these students will be offered.
