Description
The cognitive construct of working memory (WM) is complex and reflects multiple factors. Measuring WM involves employing a range of tasks that are assumed to demand storage and processing, then applying the individual differences found in WM to understand the role WM plays in a broad range of cognitive tasks. Approaches to the assessment of WM have evolved employing empirical and theoretical measures. However, underlying these tasks are essential language sub-processes which are often overlooked. I will review these measures and discuss how inherent and essential language sub-processes of phonology, semantics and syntax are necessary for performance as well as for accurate determination of working memory abilities in both adults and children. Suggestions for modifications to assessment measures will be provided.
