Description

In 1961 almost all of the tiles of the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem’s Old City dating from the 16th through the early 20th century were removed and replaced with new ones. The historic tiles have languished on the site out in the open or in poor storage since then. Many have ‘disappeared’ and some were sold at auction or appear in individual private collections. I have proposed using the Golden Gate at the Haram al-Sharif as a proper storage and conservation facility and am working with World Monuments to declare the Golden Gate a ‘'Monument at Risk’ in Jerusalem, which would secure funding for the structure’s restoration.
