Event Title

Reading Instruction and Reading Attitudes in the Republic of Cape Verde

Location

Burnell 109

Start Time

9-5-2012 10:10 AM

End Time

9-5-2012 10:55 AM

Description

Popular attitudes in Cape Verde regarding literacy seem to lean towards the utilitarian and/or the vocational, and away from reading for academics, for social reasons, or even for personal pleasure. As such, reading instruction seems to emphasize reading words, phrases, and short paragraphs, rather than children's literature, short stories, or novels. This presentation will explore these issues and their possible implications for Cape Verdean citizens, as well as for young Cape Verdean immigrants enrolled in U.S. schools. This presentation is part of the 2011-2012 Presidential Fellowship Program, and will address research carried out for that program.
