Intersectionality suggests that the teaching and learning process is influenced by the interaction between students’ and teachers’ multiple social identities and the differing levels of power and privilege ascribed to them. For the past year, an interdisciplinary group of faculty and student affairs colleagues have met together to discuss the impact of the theory of intersectionality on their curricular and co-curricular work with students. In this highly interactive session, presenters will introduce the concept and encourage participants to share their responses to the following questions: Does intersectionality have a place in our work at BSU? Do you incorporate intersectionality in your work with students? If so, has it been useful? How do we project certain identities or affiliations in our work? Participants will leave the session with ideas and readings on intersectionality, as well as increased awareness of this collaborative effort to consider how best to teach the whole student.
