Description
In this set of presentations, faculty from two BSC departments demonstrate ways in which language research addresses the language issues our students face. Fernanda Ferreira’s presentation focuses on the impact of local teachers on the maintenance of Portuguese as a vibrant heritage language in Massachusetts. Despite the significant decline in language proficiency among third-generation heritage learners (Ferreira 2007), Portuguese is still spoken in many communities, especially considering the recent influx of Brazilians. Videotaped interviews with Portuguese instructors show the importance of dialect choice in the classroom and the need for teacher training. Anne Doyle’s presentation examines current approaches in the teaching of writing which apply the rhetorical issues of audience and purpose to instruction in grammar and in disciplinary genres.
