Location

Description

As greater numbers of students with disabilities matriculate in higher education institutions, how do we as educators prepare them for life outside the classroom? When it is time for these students to find careers, what (mis)perceptions are they faced with in the community? Students with disabilities often do not have opportunities to participate in meaningful projects with potential career applications. Civic engagement programs and service learning courses can serve to create mutually beneficial and sustainable partnerships that foster community understanding and create workforce skill development. This interactive workshop will focus on examples of successful service-learning projects in a variety of communication studies courses that have included students with disabilities. Ways in which the projects can be adapted to discipline specific and cross-discipline projects at BSC will be examined and discussed with emphasis on potential challenges that might need to be addressed.
