Description

Graduate programs within education are focused on training educators and school service personnel to serve a student population with greater needs, challenges, and demands than previously encountered in the history of American education. Professional school counselors (PSCs) have a critical role in the K-12 school systems. Their role evolved over time to meet the needs and changes of students; however, this is not always seen in practice. Existing research on the role of PSCs is well documented and contends that role ambiguity of PSCs still exists in the schools. Often is the case, PSCs spend too much time performing tasks outside of their area of training and expertise. This research centered on counselor preparation and professional development focused at the grassroots levels (e.g., during graduate training) to address these issues of professional role ambiguity. Preliminary results will be presented, and potential solutions impacting professional growth and development will be discussed.
