Event Title

Plenary 6: Evolution across the Curriculum: The Nature and Teaching of Science

Location

Moakley Auditorium

Start Time

18-5-2006 2:45 PM

End Time

18-5-2006 4:00 PM

Description

School boards and science departments have faced challenges from creationists who believe that intelligent design – the view that a creator, and not the process of evolution, is responsible for the development of life on this planet – should be taught side by side with evolutionary theory. Our panel discussion will explore two questions that this controversy reveals about the nature and teaching of science:

  1. How does the controversy show disconnections between the public’s view of science and how it actually works?
  2. How does the teaching of evolution across the curriculum help address misperceptions in science?

Panelists will give brief presentations, followed by general discussion.
