Description
First-year seminars (FYS) are discipline-specific, topical courses that address learning outcomes designed to prepare and orient students toward productive and fulfilling college careers. Among these learning outcomes are fluency in written English, critical thinking skills, and information literacy. This panel discussion features faculty members from across the disciplines who will share their FYS experiences and offer advice for creating both a feasible syllabus and a productive classroom environment. Questions addressed include: How are these new students different from our other students? If I need to focus on writing, how much course content can I include? How can I teach writing if I've never taught writing before? I created a graduate course but these students are barely out of high school - how do I fix this problem? The session should be useful for anyone creating a new course or incorporating writing or critical thinking in an existing course.
