Project Description/Abstract

I propose to complete research and prepare for publication volume 2 of 2 volumes on the restorations of the Dome of the Rock & al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem in the 20th and 21st centuries. My co-author Isam Awwad (Architect of the Dome for 32 years), and I will research archival documents in Jerusalem, digitally scan the, translate them from Arabic and provide contextual analysis. I will formally reinstate research permissions with the Minister of Islamic Religious Affairs in Amman. The project is formally affiliated with CBRL (Center for British Research in the Levant) in Amman and Jerusalem with workspace and technical assistance provided there-the latter also provided by the Albright Institute in Jerusalem, my residence for the grant period. I am also working with CBRL to publish both volumes in their series of texts on Jerusalem. I will also begin to write an analytical text for significant restorations.
