Description

How might an ethic and practice of forgiveness manifest in and be relevant to your discipline and teaching? This workshop explores the concept of forgiveness, with its challenges and opportunities, from a variety of contexts (business, health, community, and education). We will consider, through a lens scholarship of teaching and learning, how forgiveness could be an appropriate ethic and practice to cultivate in our roles as staff, faculty and administrators. Participants will actively discuss case studies and share from their own teaching experiences about complex situations and dialogues. We will examine common sources of conflict which include deeply held identities, beliefs and values. Finally, there will be an exploration of key concepts and theoretical frameworks and their application to teaching and learning from Desmond and Mpho Tutu’s book, “The Book of Forgiving” (HarperCollins, 2014) which is based on the work of South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
