    Muriel (Turner) Smith, U.S. Coast Guard, SPARS, Yeoman first class. Stationed in Washington, DC, Boston (USCGRS), CGI(WR) Palm Beach, Fl. She did secretarial work for the officers. She learned to get along with people.

    Hugo Sweeney and William J. Sweeney

    Hugo Sweeney discusses growing up in rural Texas, enlisting in the military in 1939 and serving in the Coast Guard, rising to rank of Chief Boatswains’ Mate. Hugo served for 6-1/2 years throughout the Second World War. He served on the Saranac in the Gulf of Mexico, then transferred to shore station in Grand Isle, Louisiana. During the war Sweeney was also stationed on the North Atlantic patrol. William Sweeney discusses his service in the Army during the Vietnam War, his injuries from the war and his recovery. Both father and son discuss the differences in their military and post-military experiences.

    William J. Sweeney, U.S. Army, 24th Infantry Division, NATO Expedition Force.

    William Sweeney was in Germany & Laos during the Vietnam War. He sustained a spinal cord injury and spent many months in Chelsea Naval Hospital. He spoke about the conditions and his experience at Chelsea Naval Hospital.

    Tayna Taylor, Navy, Gulf War Persian Gulf. Torpedoman (programmed the torpedos), Weapons.

    Taylor said women could not go on tour in submarines, but did the programming while in port. She and her crew drove/navigated ships. The men in the Navy were not nice to the females in the Navy. She believes that the military helps anyone learn discipline and respect for authority.

    David Vacchi, U.S. Army, Lieutenant Colonel, 3rd battalion, 16th Field Artillery, second brigade, fourth infantry.

    David Vacchi served in Baghdad, Taji, Husseinia, and Kikurk. His experience is different from others in that he was a colonel and had more control over his operations. He spoke about making connections with the native people of the country and respecting their culture.

    William J. Walsh Jr.

    William J. Walsh was a Seabee during the 2nd World War, serving in Iceland, Ireland, Scotland, England, and Okinawa. He participated in the landing at Omaha Beach in June, 1944. Walsh credits serving with providing him both education and discipline.

    Richard F. Williams Sr.

    Richard Williams served as an E-7 Chief Hospital Combat Corpsman in the Navy during WWII. Williams landed on Okinawa on April 1, 1945 at the beginning of the battle that would last almost 3 months. He tended to wounded on the beach and assisted in setting up the field hospital in Buckner Bay. After serving in the Navy, Williams joined the Naval Reserves and served in Korea.
