Online Mentoring College-bound Asian Students
Presentation is included in Panel 10: Student Engagement and Global-Local Dynamics in Education
Abstract
College-bound students in the US and in China, Korea, and other Asian countries are selected to study with professors in the US through online collaborative learning environments of an LMS and web conferences. Contrasting to MOOCs or Khan Academy, students in the Pioneer Research Program can get access not only to the rich resources and information, but also to the professor and other students via web conferences for face-to-face interactions and discussions, as if they were in a brick-and-mortar classroom for human bonding. The program provides students opportunities to learn and to adjust to the academic rigor at the college level, simultaneously, to observe the difference between the two cultures and values, without leaving the country. This paper examines the learning experiences of students, the teaching experiences of the professor, and the technical and logical supports of the program staff.
