Description

Heavy metals accumulate in the environment due to industrial development and human habitation. In the Taunton River Watershed (of which Bridgewater’s Town River is a part) there are elevated levels of heavy metal ions such as cadmium, lead, copper, iron, and silver. We have found bacteria that can not only tolerate these elevated levels of ions, but may be useful in eliminating them from groundwater and river sediments. Bioremediation of contaminated sites using these organisms as “clean up” squads would assist in sustainability efforts in this region.
