Author Biography

Jennifer Rycenga is Professor Emerita in the Humanities Department at San José State University. Her scholarly work crosses various feminist fields, including feminist musicology (Queering the Popular Pitch, co-edited with Sheila Whiteley, Routledge 2006), global feminism (Frontline Feminisms, co-edited with Marguerite Waller, Routledge 2001), lesbian history, and abolitionist history. Her forthcoming book, Schooling the Nation: The Success of the Canterbury Female Academy (University of Illinois, 2024) examines Prudence Crandall and the Black women students who attended that advanced academy in 1833-34, analyzing this event as a potent early example of intersectionality. Her next area of research interest will examine the convergence of justice, history, and the natural world. She can be reached at jennifer.rycenga@sjsu.edu.
