Note on the Author

Dr. David A. Almeida is a Professor of Special Education at Bridgewater State University and is also an Affiliated Faculty Member of Bridgewater State University’s Pedro Pires Institute for Cape Verdean Studies. He holds a Master’s Degree and a Doctorate from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education, a Master’s Degree in Special Education from Assumption College, and a Bachelor’s Degree in English from The College of the Holy Cross. His expertise includes teaching literacy to children and adolescents with learning, attention, and/or behavioral disabilities and his current research interests surround literacy instruction and reading attitudes in the Republic of Cape Verde.

Dr. Joao J. Rosa is an Associate Professor of TESOL at Bridgewater State University. He is the former Executive Director and Academic Director of the Pedro Pires Institute for Cape Verdean Studies. Dr. Rosa is the He is co-author of Capitalism’s Educational Catastrophe and the Advancing End Game Revolt (2015), and, Pedagogy in the Age of Media Control: Language Deception and Digital Democracy (2011), and Discursos Linguísticos e realidades nas salas de aulas: Vencendo a luta pelo controle (2010). Dr. Rosa has a forthcoming book (2021) entitled Youth in Dangerous Times: Surveillance from Cradle to the Grave. His research interests include sociolinguistics, language acquisition, urban education, curricular theory and cultural studies.
