Milton and the End of Renaissance Friendship
I will continue work on a book-length study, Milton and the End of Renaissance Friendship, which examines the impact of the humanist revival of classical friendship on the works of John Milton (1608-1674). In particular, I am seeking a course release for both Fall 2008 and Spring 2009 so that I can prepare a book proposal for Cambridge University Press and complete work on the first half of the manuscript. The latter will require me to write an introduction; complete Chapter One; update and expand Chapter Three, a version of which was published in 2001; and begin to fashion a new Chapter Two. I am also seeking travel funds to attend the 9th International Milton Symposium in London, England, July 7-11, 2008, where I am scheduled present an essay drawn from this project.
