Project Description/Abstract

I propose to complete the research and write a chapter “The Tiles of the Dome of the Rock: an Assessment of the Revetment Removed in 1964” for my book The Dome of the Rock: Symbol of Jerusalem. I plan to write my book during my sabbatical year 2008/2009. I will research the chapter in Jerusalem over 2 month period. I, with my colleague Khader Salameh (Director of the Islamic Museum, on the Haram al-Sharif, Jerusalem), will examine and catalogue the older surviving tiles removed from the Dome of the Rock in the early 1960’s, now stored outside in boxes or on the ground in deplorable conditions. I will photograph and catalogue the multi-period tiles (dating from the mid-16th century to the 1950’s); my colleague will read and translate the inscribed tiles. These few remaining tiles—the only record of the past exterior revetment—are threatened, gradually disintegrating, languishing outside, exposed to the elements.
