Location

End Time

Description
Instructors and students are in need of consistent communication with respect to term papers, projects, case study analyses, essays etc. Both parties have distinct obligations in the process. The instructor is responsible for outlining the task’s purpose, the procedure, the parameters and how its criteria will be measured. Conversely, the student is responsible for understanding the task, its expectations and thoroughly meeting criteria.
A thoughtfully constructed rubric brings both instructor and student into common understanding via a single table or page document. Instructors create assignments that are qualitative but then make them measurable by assigning specific criteria and levels of achievement.
Upon receiving the assignment, students are made responsible for the work prescribed. However, with these criteria and achievement levels thoughtfully communicated through the rubric, students have a genuine opportunity to attain the highest predetermined level of achievement. Finally, for students, the rubric can also serve as a tool to self-assess and a final checklist to consult before final submission.
In this presentation participants will investigate the potential of the rubric, and its value in instructor/student communication. Participants would depart with all slides and notes provided, resources to rubric builder tools, a pair of podcasts and other job aids.
