Abstract
One of the landmark discoveries of modern inorganic chemistry was the isolation and structural characterization of transition metal complexes that possess multiple metal-metal bonds. The seminal discoveries of the early 1960s have evolved into a field of considerable breadth and complexity. One particularly important milestone in the field was the synthesis and structural characterization of salts containing the octachlorodirhenateanion, [Re2Cl8]2-. The synthesis of a tetrabutylammonium salt, [Bu4N]2[Re2Cl8], was first achieved by the hypophosphorous acid (H3PO2) reduction of [ReO4]- in aqueous hydrochloric acid. The reaction provided access to a salt of [Re2Cl8]2- that has good solubility properties in polar organic solvents and that facilitated numerous studies of the chemical and physical properties of the anion. This chapter discusses the procedures and properties of tetrabutylammonium perrhenate(VII), tetrabutylammonium octachlorodirhenate(III), and tetra(acetato)dichlorodirhenium(III).
