Description

Recent events in the Middle East have underscored the importance attached to the control of information, on the internet and in the other communication media. Although efforts in 2011 to "close down the internet" were uneven in their results, affronts to freedom of speech and suppression of information continue today, both abroad and at home. Censorship, found on many levels in society, comes from a variety of sources: governments, educational institutions, formal and informal groups, and individuals. Some censorship is overt, such as a book burning, but it can also be manifested in more subtle, and perhaps more dangerous ways, as self-censorship. Panelists will discuss issues of censorship as they pertain to each of their disciplines, exploring how and why texts and media are challenged, banned, or edited and how others respond when information is forbidden or access to information is limited.
