Abstract
As a gerontological social worker, I aim to support the health of older adults. I want to dispel myths about ageism in our society, advocate for better health equity within our social systems, and support the dignity and worth of older adults in our communities. I also want our students, as well as broader fellow community members in our society, to understand that to respect people who are aging is to respect themselves. I always say to folks that describe their age, especially on their birthdays, that it is a new day, a new opportunity, a new age to grow wisdom. Maybe I will think differently when I am older, but the folks I worked with in community settings and nursing homes would grinningly say after I would be excited for their birthday, “Well, it sure beats the alternative!”
