Project Description/Abstract

I propose to write a paper analyzing the mathematics of M. C. Escher's Path of Life III woodcut. This paper will address issues such as what symmetries relate the fish shaped tiles that make up the background of the picture, how those symmetries change when the shading and decoration of the fish is taken into consideration, what surface and what transformation or projection would make a tiling of equal sized fish appear to recede into the distance as shown in the image, what type of curves are superimposed on the fish, and how those curves change their nature at the boundary of the image.
